SquashSmarts Star Bracelets
The latest fashion craze emerged at the 2004 United States Junior Open: the SquashSmarts star bracelet.
Designed, developed and marketed by 16-year old Sandra Mumanachit of Narberth, PA, the hip, red, round bracelets are etched with the name of Philadelphia’s first-and-only urban youth squash program, SquashSmarts..
The idea for the bracelets stemmed from the yellow silicon ‘LiveStrong’ Lance Armstrong version which has become a cult collectors’ item in recent months. And like the Armstrong original, all proceeds from the SquashSmarts bracelets benefited a worthy cause – the kids from SquashSmarts!
Of the 400 bracelets, available for $3.00/piece, all sold out within a matter of hours. Sales were diligently handles by Sandra, her sister, Sarah, and the four SquashSmarts team members (Tempest Bowden, Tyreek Davis, Rachel Edmonds and Kareem Price) who qualified for the US Open. All made great effort to spread the newest fad.
With 500-plus players, coaches, and parents in attendance at the Yale tournament, the captive audience at was hungry for the hot item. “There were a lot of people there,” says Mumanachit “and so this project just made sense!”
All told, the 400 bracelets sold netted SquashSmarts approximately $600 – and there are plans to produce a more of the sold-out item for sale at future junior squash tournaments. “We’re thrilled by the results,” comments SquashSmarts Director Stephen Gregg. “and we are extremely grateful to Sandra and her family for conceiving and managing this whole project. Perhaps this kind of initiative might lead to more creative projects by young SquashSmarts fans down the road!”
