Below are resources we hope will help you during these uncertain times. SqSm staff are not experts in every areas, and we cannot be with you, but please know we are here to help however we can.

    • For specific questions about your claim, include:
      • Full name as it appears on your claim, including any suffix used. 
      • Last 4 digits of your Social Security Number. 

2A. UNEMPLOYMENT COMPENSATION (CARES Act)
Do I qualify for Unemployment Compensation?
  • Beginning on March 29th, if you file for and are eligible for unemployment compensation you will receive an additional $600. 
    • This payment ended on July 31st, 2020.

  • When will payment be issued?
    • Once implemented, payment will be issued starting with that due the week ending April 4th, 2020. 
    • The benefit will be issued on a biweekly basis. 
    • Individuals will receive the additional funds the week after they file for and receive regular unemployment compensation benefits.

  • You do not have to file separately for this benefit. Eligibility is considered based on applications for regular UC. 
    • How to File for Unemployment Benefits in Pennsylvania

  • Self-employed individuals:
    • The CARES Act WILL provide assistance to the self-employed, independent contractors, and gig workers.

  • If approved, your first benefit payment should arrive within four weeks of filing for unemployment compensation. 
    • Continue filing your claim every two weeks even while you are waiting for approval. 
 
  • The additional $600 is taxable. 
    • It is subject to 10% Federal Withholding Tax if you elect to have taxes withheld from your regular UC or PUA benefits.

  • Pandemic Emergency Unemployment Compensation (PEUC) 
    • Provides an additional 13 weeks of UC benefits to individuals who exhaust their regular 26 weeks of benefits.
    • This allows for a total of 39 weeks of UC benefits.

  • Important Information:
    • If you are eligible for UC, you will receive two letters and a 4-digit PIN.
      • Your PIN will arrive in the mail. Keep it in a safe place that is easy to remember. 
    • You do not have to prove that you have applied or searched for a new job to maintain your UC benefits. 
    • You are not required to register with PACareerLink.pa.gov
    • You may receive benefits for the first week that you are unemployed. There is no longer a waiting week for UC. 

2B. PANDEMIC UNEMPLOYMENT ASSITANCE
PUA FAQs   ||   Filing for PUA
  • Individuals covered under PUA:
    • The self-employed (e.g. independent contractors, gig economy workers, and workers for certain religious entities)
    • Those seeking part-time employment 
    • Individuals lacking sufficient work history
    • Individuals who otherwise do not qualify for regular unemployment compensation or extended benefits.

2C. WORKERS COMPENSATION BENEFITS
Do I qualify for Workers’ Compensation?
  • If you believe you may have been exposed to COVID-19 in the workplace, you may be eligible for Workers’ Compensation benefits.

  • Notify your employer to file either:: 
    • a “Disease-as-Injury” WC claim, or…
    • an “Occupational Disease” WC claim.

  • Disease-as-Injury Claim
    • Requires you to provide medical evidence that you were exposed to COVID-19 in the workplace.

  • Occupational Disease Claim
    • Requires you to show that COVID-19 is occurring more in your occupation/industry than in the general population.
