SquashSmarts, Philadelphia's
only urban youth enrichment program utilizing the sport of Squash and
Academic Tutoring, seeks an experienced individual to serve as its Director of Squash, Health and
Fitness. SquashSmarts is a dynamic and rapidly
expanding after school program operating out of West
Philadelphia’s Drexel University
and North Philadelphia’s Lenfest Community Center. SquashSmarts
mission is to provide high-impact and high-intensity Health, Education and
Community opportunities for Philadelphia
public middle and high school students in need. Established in 2001,

Director of Squash: This is a unique opportunity
for a highly qualified man or woman with extensive squash experience to
work closely with the Executive Director and Program Staff to manage a
year-round squash, health and fitness. The individual will be responsible
for implementing and enhancing the program’s squash and fitness
curriculum. Candidates must have
excellent coaching, presentation, writing and interpersonal skills.
Candidates must hold a BA/BS or equivalent international degree and must be
fluent in English. Strong interdisciplinary skills and additional course
work in education, childhood development, social work, fitness
and/or sports psychology are preferred.
Minimum weekly hours of service: Monday-Thursday 10:00am-6:30pm,
Saturdays 9:30am-12:00pm. Special weekend and evening events as needed.
Specific responsibilities include:
1. Recruit and retain a class of
8-10 middle school students each season;
2. Design and direct daily squash
sessions for weekday and weekend practices with primary focus on squash
instruction but also on fitness, stretching and nutrition;
3. Design, implement and manage
daily, weekly and semester squash calendar;
4. Communicate and meet frequently
with middle and high school gym teachers and counselors;
5. Communicate and meet frequently
with parents/guardians to monitor student performance;
6. Recruit local professionals,
students and citizens to serve as volunteer squash instructors;
7. Record daily evaluation
(attitude, attendance, effort) and manage standardized testing (pre-and
post-evaluation) for all students;
8. Prepare updates for weekly staff meetings;
9. Manage student participation in
two (2) National Urban Squash & Education (NUSEA) tournaments;
10. Manage student participation in
local junior squash tournaments and summer squash/fitness camps;
11. Manage and direct Embrace Camp,
an in-house summer camp run by SquashSmarts.
12. Manage existing (and cultivate
new) relations with key individuals and sponsors in order to enhance fund
raising, equipment, special events, auctions and exhibitions;
13. Serve as a spokesperson and
ambassador within the Philadelphia
squash community for the program mission;
14. Coordinate and participate in
Squash subcommittee meetings.
Assist
SquashSmarts staff with the following:
1. Prepare sports-related grant
applications with Director of Development;
2. Prepare squash and fitness
reports and updates for website, email and other printed materials with Executive
Director;
3. Organize squash summer
enrichment opportunities with Program staff;
4. Attend special networking and
fundraising events as needed;
5. Attend and assist with
organizing community service projects with Service & Leadership Director.
Additional
requirements:
1. Build strong relationships with
each student in the program and their families through constant
communication,
including making evening and weekend phone calls and home homes;
2. Collaborate with staff,
parents, teachers, volunteers and mentors to ensure a fully integrated
approach to academic and life skills development in each student
3. Work on various projects as a member
of an expanding non-profit organization;
4. Pass criminal background
screening and hold a current driver’s license in good standing.
5. Non-U.S. citizen applicants
must hold appropriate working papers valid for at least two years.

in education to work closely with the Executive Director and Board of
Directors to manage a year-round academic curriculum. The individual will
be responsible for strengthening the program’s existing academic
model and brining new ideas to enhance this model. Candidates must have impeccable speaking,
presentation, writing and interpersonal skills, must hold a BA/BS or
equivalent international degree, must be fluent in English. Strong
interdisciplinary skills and additional course work in education, childhood
development, social work, education or psychology preferred. Minimum Weekly Hours of Service:

12. Explore partnerships with area
educational and cultural institutions as needed.
13. Coordinate and participate in
Academic Subcommittee meetings as needed.
