SquashSmarts combines the sport of Squash with Academic Tutoring &
Mentoring for under-served, urban youth in order
to develop academic and athletic achievement. Founded in 2001, SquashSmarts
is the third of twelve programs nationwide to utilize squash as a vehicle
for changing young people’s lives.
SquashSmarts boys and girls are recruited and selected based
on effort, not ability. Students
in grades 5, 6, 7 and 8 who attend any Philadelphia public
school may try out for SquashSmarts. If selected, students must remain in
the program through 12th grade. SquashSmarts offers two program
locations: North Philadelphia’s Lenfest Center and West Philadelphia’s
Drexel University Our centers are specifically designed to promote
learning and healthy habits while providing critical space and resources,
including squash courts, classrooms, offices and access to technology.
SquashSmarts Instructional Sessions Schedule:
September-June = Monday-Thursday (4:00-6:30pm) + Saturday
(10:00am-1:00pm)
July-August = Monday-Thursday (10:00am-1:00pm) +
Friday/Saturday/Sunday camps
SquashSmarts fills a critical
void in Philadelphia’s Public Middle Schools.
Public Middle Schools in Philadelphia do not offer consistent
extracurricular activities currently for 6th, 7th
or 8th grade students. To that end, SquashSmarts fosters life
skills, enhances academic achievement and develops squash and fitness
skills in a positive team environment.
